How to protect your intellectual property online

How to protect your intellectual property online

Calling all live and online facilitators, course and program creators

How do you know if you are giving away your intellectual property in error?

Let me show you how easily this happens based on choices we make early on in business.

Best platforms for business

I’m in a community forum where the most asked question is: “what’s the best platform for my business”

If you’re a course or program creator you're spoilt for choice with different platforms right?

I started on Teachable, moved to Thinkific then Kartra and now on Groove.cm™ as it combines 18 different services that are necessary to run your business.

But... and this is the big question you really need to ask...

where do you store your videos?

Store your videos independent of the platform you’re using

Why? Because if you change platforms, you only need to embed the video content.

No spending hours uploading original videos to the new platform.

The same holds true for storing videos from live online events like webinars and masterclasses.

Why YouTube is never my recommendation

IP Australia explains that Intellectual Property (IP) refers to creations of the mind.

IP rights legally protect your idea and give you the exclusive rights to profit from them, supporting your competitive advantage.

Copyright protects the owner’s original expression of an idea.

Copyright is free and automatic and exists the moment you express your creation in ‘material form’, it does not require registration or the payment of any fees. This could be a recorded video, a method you design, or unique content you write.

Do you want your participants:

👎🏻 being distracted by a related video YouTube suggests instead of your offer?

👎🏻 sharing the YouTube video with others or embedding it elsewhere?

👎🏻 transcribing your video using a browser AI plug-in that infringes your Copyright?

Can you see that if you have IP you want to protect then using Unlisted or Password protected YouTube videos is not ideal?

However, it can be a challenge to protect Copyright in the AI environment, unless you are willing to take legal action.

Invest in your competitive advantage

I chose Vimeo as my video storage and still use it 8 years on to protect my IP. I can easily control:

👉🏻 which websites you can embed the video on

👉🏻 what controls are shown

👉🏻 privacy of my original video

👉🏻 updates to a single video without upsetting where it's embedded

It’s a cost effective way to ensure my Copyright is a foregone conclusion without formalising this in a legal way.

I believe in Vimeo so much here is my referral link and it doesn't cost you any more.
